Facebook Feed

Both organic and paid in-feed Facebook ads appear in a user’s feed as they scroll. Users can engage with the ad by clicking on the CTA, liking, commenting, or sharing the post.

You can choose between two orientations for ads that appear in the Facebook feed: Landscape and Portrait. Note that on mobile, all types of videos render in a 2:3 aspect ratio, so adjust your concepting accordingly if you are targeting a primarily mobile audience.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect Ratio: 4:5 is recommended. Other standard aspect ratios, like 9:16 (portrait) and 16:9 are supported but may be masked to 4:5. Desktop versions of the Facebook Feed will automatically convert to 1:1. This same video will run at 2:3 on mobile.
  • Max Resolution: None, so upload the highest resolution video available.
  • Min Resolution Dimensions: 1080 x 1080
  • Max video file size: 4GB
  • Video length: 1 second to 241 minutes
  • Max frame rate: 30fps
  • File Formats: .mp4, .mov, or .gif
  • Video captions are optional but highly recommended. Facebook feed videos default to a sound-off experience (the user has to manually unmute the video), so be sure to include captions if any vital information is conveyed in the audio of your video (e.g., dialogue, VO, etc.).

Supporting Copy

  • The primary text is limited to 125 characters, but may be truncated.
  • If using a CTA Link, the Headline is limited to 40 characters, and the Description is limited to 30 characters. On mobile, the Description will only show if Facebook thinks it’s likely to resonate with the viewer.

Facebook 360 Video

Facebook 360 videos allow the viewer to interact with the video by turning their mobile device or dragging their finger across the image to get a panoramic view. On the desktop, viewers can use their cursor to get a similarly immersive experience.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect ratio: 2:1
  • Max resolution: 5120 x 2560 (monoscopic) and 5120 x 5120 (stereoscopic)
  • Max file size: 10 GB
  • Max Length: 30 minutes
  • Max frame rate: 30fps

Facebook In-Stream Video

Social Media Video Ad Specs & Placements Guide (2022) - QuickFrame (1)

Facebook in-stream video placements are 5-20 second ads (usually pre-roll) that play before in-stream videos from publishers and content creators or during Facebook Live streams from a select group of partners.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect Ratio: 16:9 or 1:1 is recommended
  • Max Resolution: None, upload the highest resolution video available.

  • Video length: 5 seconds to 10 minutes

Supporting Copy

  • Primary text: 125 characters. Text over this recommendation is allowed but may be truncated.
  • If using a CTA Link, the Headline is limited to 40 characters, and the Description is limited to 30 characters. On mobile, the Description will only show if Facebook thinks it’s likely to resonate with the viewer.

Facebook Video Feeds

When a user clicks on a video in their Facebook Feed, it opens a separate Video Feed player that has additional videos a user can scroll through and watch. This ad placement allows you to insert your video into a user’s Video Feed.

This placement does not support a CTA button so videos will appear as native video advertisingon the Video Feed. Viewers can still engage with the video by liking, commenting, or sharing, and they can click through to your brand profile.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect Ratio: 4:5 is recommended. Other standard aspect ratios, like 9:16 and 16:9, are supported but may be masked to 4:5. This same video will run at 2:3 on mobile.
  • Max Resolution: None, upload the highest resolution video available.
  • Min Resolution Dimensions: 1080 x 1080
  • Max file size: 4GB
  • Videos length: 1 second to 241 minutes
  • File Formats: .mp4, .mov, or .gif. Additional types are supported.

Facebook Stories

Facebook Stories placements are full-screen vertical ads that appear between Stories. They can be up to 15 seconds long but are skippable. It’s important to have a “thumb-stopping” hook in the first few seconds that captures viewers’ attention so they continue watching the ad.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect Ratio: 9:16. Ratios from 1.91:1 are supported, but if repurposing a video below 9:16, colored gradient bars will be added above and below to fill the screen.
  • Max Resolution: None, upload the highest resolution video available.
  • Min Resolution Dimensions: 1080 x 1080
  • Max file size: 4GB
  • Video length: 1 second to 2 minutes
  • File Formats: .mp4, .mov, or .gif. Additional types are supported.
  • Do not place text or logos in the top or bottom 250 pixels of the video so they aren’t covered by your profile icons (top of the screen) or CTA (bottom of the screen).
  • Video captions and sound are both optional but highly recommended as most viewers watch Stories with sound-on.

Supporting Copy

  • Primary text: 125 characters. Text over this recommendation is allowed but may be truncated.
  • Headlines: 40 characters. Text over this recommendation is allowed but may be truncated.

Facebook Instant Articles

Social Media Video Ad Specs & Placements Guide (2022) - QuickFrame (2)

Instagram Video Ad Specs & Placements

What size should Instagram video ads be? What makes a good Instagram video ad? Can an Instagram video be 1920×1080? This section will answer these questions about Instagram video ad specs, and more.

Instagram has over 1 billion monthly active users, making it one of the most popular social media platforms for advertisers to reach a wide array of audiences.

Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories has over 500 million daily users consuming peer-created content. Though users can create static cards (each card in a story can be a maximum of 15 seconds long), the vast majority of Stories content is video.

Video ads in Instagram Stories are fullscreen vertical ads that appear between Stories. Most are 15 seconds or less, though Instagram can accommodate videos up to 120 seconds long (cut up into 15-second cards). Videos longer than 45 seconds appear on 3 separate cards with a “Keep Watching” option on the last card.

All Instagram Stories video ads are skippable, so be sure to employ a captivating hook in the first seconds of your ad. Several video styles work well here, including live-action and stop motion (video ad example below). You can employ several CTAs, which users can respond to by swiping up on your ad.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect ratio: 9:16 is recommended, but 16:9 and 4:5 are supported
  • Max resolution: None, upload the highest resolution video available.
  • Min resolution Dimensions: 1080 x 1080
  • Max file size: 30MB
  • Video length: 1 to 120 seconds
  • Frame rate: 30 fps
  • File Formats: .mp4, .mov, or .gif. Additional types are supported.
  • Captions and sound are optional. Most users consume Instagram Stories with sound on, so ad creative should have sound to appear native and increase the completion rate

Supporting Copy

  • Primary text: 125 characters. Text over this recommendation is allowed but may be truncated.

Instagram Feed

Instagram Feed video ads are integrated directly into a user’s feed, appearing in between content as they scroll. Users can engage with the ad by liking, commenting, sharing, or clicking on a CTA.

Because users scroll quickly, be sure to include a captivating hook within the first couple of seconds of your video. Several styles of content work well for this ad placement, including live-action. Use text overlay, like in this QuickFrame-created Rory ad below, to ensure all viewers get the same messaging whether or not they are scrolling with sound on.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect ratio: 4:5 or 1:1 are recommended
  • Max resolution: None, upload the highest resolution video available.
  • Min resolution Dimensions: 1080 x 1080
  • Max file size: 30MB
  • Video length: 1 to 120 seconds long
  • Frame rate: 30 fps
  • File Formats: .mp4, .mov, or .gif. Additional types are supported.
  • Video captions and sound are optional. We recommend including captions for videos that have voiceover or dialogue.

Supporting Copy

  • Primary Text: 125 characters are recommended, but can support up to 2,200 characters.
  • Note: only two rows of copy will appear below an Instagram Feed video ad.

Instagram Explore

The Explore page (reached by tapping the magnifying glass in the app menu) allows a user to discover content from creators that they do not yet follow. Instagram Explore video ad placements appear amongst the content Instagram specifically curates for a user based on their interests.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect ratio: 4:5 or 1:1 are recommended
  • Max resolution: None, upload the highest resolution video available.
  • Min resolution Dimensions: 1080 x 1080
  • Max file size: 30MB
  • Video length: 1 to 120 seconds long
  • Frame rate: 30 fps
  • File Formats: .mp4, .mov, or .gif. Additional types are supported.
  • Captions and sound are both optional. We recommend including captions for videos that have voiceover or dialogue.

Supporting Copy

  • Primary Text: 125 characters are recommended, but can support up to 2,200 characters.

Reels

Reels, Reels, Reels! As mentioned, these are clearly Instagram’s current and near-future focus after sunsetting the placement’s previous incarnation, IGTV.

Advertisers can and should focus on making their own and making these seem native to the platform. They can also consider branded content partnerships with current personalities.

Reels offer insights to creators, so you can see what’s working and what isn’t. If scrollers go to the Reels tab, they may stumble upon yours, too, since that page shows any number of Instagram accounts. Reels work best when they’re short and move quickly — 60 seconds is the longest they can be. They can be created in the app or uploaded, but should be original content (not hastily repurposed). Reels are shot in a vertical, full-screen format.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect ratio: 9:16
  • Max resolution: None, upload the highest resolution video available.
  • Min resolution: 1080 x 1920 pixels
  • Max file size: 4GB
  • Video length: Max 60 seconds
  • Frame rate: 30 fps
  • Recommended file type: .mp4

Creator Alliances

Meta is heavily investing in “creators,” who can either earn bonuses by adding in-stream ads ortake part in setting up shopsand “drive excitement with exclusive product launches from the Instagram app” by linking their account with an IG merchandise partner.

These ads are generally selected by Meta, but consider if your ads make sense for a specific creator or personality and suggest a partnership.

With the demise of the third-party cookie, this is the kind of targeting that will make sense now and in the future. Having an influencer tag a product on their video may be one of the most effective ways of reaching consumers out there.

And if you’re creating your own ad, consider mimicking the style of user-generated content (UGC) to create that sense of warmth and connection — or forge an alliance with a personality to generate those spots yourself.

The line between posts and ads is going to become an increasingly fine one. Instagram tells potential advertisersthey can “turn any of your posts into an ad instantly”.

Single Video – Snapchat

Social Media Video Ad Specs & Placements Guide (2022) - QuickFrame (3)

Snapchat Single Video placements are fullscreen video ads that appear in between or after various content, including User Stories, Publishers, Creators, and Our Stories.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect ratio: 9:16
  • Max file size: 1 GB

  • File Formats: .mp4 or .mov and H.264 encoded
  • Avoid placing logos, text, or graphic elements in the top and bottom 150px as they will interfere with app elements

Snapchat Story Ads

Snapchat users can find new content via the Discover tab in the app. Snapchat Story Ads allow advertisers to place a branded tile in the Snapchat Discover section that opens into a “chapterized” collection of 3-20 images or videos, creating a branded content experience.

Video Ad Specs

There are two main types of lenses: Face Lenses and World Lenses.

Face lenses recognize the user’s eyes, mouth, and head and transform their faces into creative characters. World lenses use the same technology to transform the environment in a Snapchatters lens. The user can use their rear-facing camera to superimpose AR on the image.

Twitter Video Ad Specs & Placements

What are the specs for Twitter ads? What are Twitter video specs? What ratio are videos on Twitter? This section will answer these questions about Twitter video ad specs, and more.

Twitter has seen a growth of 34% YoY in Monetizable Active Users—currently, there are 186 million monetizable daily active users on the platform worldwide. According to Twitter, it is the #1 platform for discovery and users spend 26% more time viewing ads on Twitter than on other leading platforms.

In April 2021, Twitter announced a complete refresh of its Ad Suite, streamlining its products together into five distinct categories, a far cry from the 22+ individual ad formats available before. These five new formats are:

Promoted Ads: This category can be used in multiple ways across the marketing funnel, with images, videos, and other ad features.
Follower Ads: This category allows you to promote your account to a target audience for awareness and follower growth.
Twitter Amplify: This category is similar to Twitter’s original Amplify Pre-Roll ad format, where you can align your ads with premium video content from relevant publishers.
Twitter Takeover: This category allows you to place your ads in the most premium mass-reach placements, like the Timeline and Explore tab, to drive results across the funnel.
Twitter Live: This category is pretty self-explanatory. This will allow advertisers to broadcast content live to a global audience, who can join the stream in real-time.

They may have slashed their ad formats by more than 75%, but within each category exists subcategories. As Twitter explains:

“Within each of those 5 categories, we have identified sub-categories that are specific formats that an advertiser can choose to run for a campaign or add to a media plan. For example, Twitter Takeover is our category of takeover products – Timeline Takeover, Trend Takeover, and Trend Takeover+ are the individual products that fall under that category. Twitter Ad Features, such as a Branded Hashtag can be added to these individual products to increase the reach and engagement of a campaign.”

These new ad categories won’t take effect immediately, so you should continue to leverage the following ad formats, but do know they will be phased out through summer 2021.

Promoted GIF

A version of the Promoted Tweet offering, which inserts a sponsored Tweet into a user’s feed, the Promoted GIF allows you to pair a moving image with your sponsored tweet.

Video Ad Specs

  • Aspect ratio: 1:1 is recommended.
  • Max file size: 1GB
  • Video length: 15 seconds or less is recommended, but can go up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
